What is VRF conditioning?

Variable refrigerant flow (VRF) air conditioning divides a building into zones which can be customised for comfort and energy efficiency. VRF systems provide heating and cooling by recycling refrigerant between an outdoor unit and ducted indoor unit(s).

With VRF technology, up to 50 indoor units can be connected to a single outdoor unit.

The Ultimate Guide to VRF Air Conditioning

Benefits of VRF Air Conditioning

Quiet & energy efficient

Operating at ultra-quiet sounds levels and using minimal energy.

Cost saving

More compact than other air conditioning systems, it can reduce the upfront costs as less alternations are required to the buildings structure to install.

Intelligent refrigerant flow

Refrigerant flow is managed depending on the capacity requirements of each zone.

Improved comfort levels

Regulates internal room air temperature & comfort levels effectively and efficiently.

Features of City Multi VRF systems

  • Micro channel heat exchangers improve efficiency & reduce refrigerant volume
  • Advanced control logic ensures each system provides optimum levels of comfort
  • Option to pump down and isolate refrigerant within the VRF installation and the ability to work alongside any leak detection systems, including full safety and environmental protection from refrigerant leakage
  • City multi VRF can be applied as both heat recovery (r2 series) and heat pump (y series) systems
  • Used for 22kw to 34kw systems

City multi VRF was the UK’s first R32 heat recovery & heat pump system.

Sustainable heating and cooling

As building codes and markets demand lower carbon footprints and greater sustainability, VRF systems offer a cleaner and more effective way to heat buildings.

As an all-electric system, there is no need for fossil fuels as VRF repurposes existing heat from outdoor air.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do VRF systems work?

VRF systems use refrigerant to repurpose existing heat from outdoor ambient air. Generally, VRF systems operate in either the heating or cooling mode. However, you can choose to heat and cool at the same time for buildings that varied comfort levels (such as high-rise buildings, hotels or medical centres).

What is the difference between VRF and HVRF?

VRF and HVRF systems are very similar, however, the main difference is that HVRF uses both water and refrigerant whereas VRF solely uses refrigerant.
