Mitsubishi Electric has announced that it will begin phasing out its Ecodan R32 heat pumps, which will be replaced by the extended next-generation Ecodan R290 range — marking the company’s continued commitment to innovation, low-carbon home heating solutions, and home comforts.
The Ecodan R32 range, first unveiled as a future-focused response to the UK’s growing demand for high-efficiency, low-global-warming-potential heating, has played an important role in advancing the market for residential heat pumps.
As part of Mitsubishi Electric’s ongoing product evolution, the company successfully launched the Ecodan R290 in October 2023. In April, it announced an extend range of R290 heat pumps. Originally available in 5kW and 6kW, the additional 8.5kW, 10kW, and 12kW models have been added. The Ecodan R290 heat pumps offer a powerful, low-carbon heating solution for larger homes and properties with higher heat loss.
A high standard in low-carbon home heating
The Ecodan R290 builds on the strengthens of the R32, while delivering an enhanced performance. With a low Global Warming Potential (GWP) of just 0.02, the Ecodan R290 heat pump, manufactured in the UK and with Quite Mark accreditation, is an environmentally responsible choice for home heating. By utilising the natural refrigerant R290, Mitsubishi Electric continues its commitment to sustainability, supporting the UK’s drive to net zero, while ensuring high performance and efficiency for homeowners.
Commenting on the announcement, Joanna Crown, Product Marketing Manager at Mitsubishi Electric, said:
"Our Ecodan R32 range helped raise the bar for low-carbon heating, and we’re proud of the role it has played in supporting the UK’s decarbonisation efforts. As the market evolves, the expanded range of Ecodan R290 heat pumps is designed to meet both future performance expectations and regulatory demands, while continuing to provide the quality and reliability that homeowners and installers expect from Mitsubishi Electric."
The Ecodan R290 models deliver flow temperatures all the way up to 75°C, making them ideal for every home, new build or properties that cannot undergo extensive fabric upgrades or insulation improvements. Additionally, they are fully compatible with existing microbore pipework, allowing homeowners to transition to renewable heating without major system overhauls.
Designed to withstand the harshest weather conditions, the Ecodan R290 heat pump operates efficiently even in extreme cold—continuing to perform in temperatures as low as -25°C. No matter where you live in the UK, this advanced heat pump ensures reliable and effective heating with ultra-low GWP all year round.
