Martin McCluskey MP, Minister for Energy Consumers and Net Zero and Member of Parliament for Inverclyde and Renfrewshire West, visited Mitsubishi Electric’s heat pump and air conditioning factory in Livingston to see first-hand how the company is supporting the UK’s transition to low-carbon heating.

The Livingston factory, which has been operating for over 30 years, is the largest manufacturer of air source heat pumps in the UK. Employing more than 1,100 people, the site produces Mitsubishi Electric’s market-leading Ecodan range of air-to-water heat pumps, helping households across the country cut carbon emissions and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

During his visit, Minister McCluskey toured the production lines where thousands of Ecodan units are manufactured each year for both the UK and European markets. He also met with members of the engineering team to discuss skills development and the importance of building a strong, future-ready green workforce.

The Livingston site is home to a dedicated training centre, which provides hands-on courses for installers and engineers from across the UK, ensuring that the growing number of qualified heat pump professionals can meet rising demand for low-carbon heating solutions.

Following the visit, Minister for Energy Consumers Martin McCluskey said: “Mitsubishi Electric’s factory is at the forefront of the clean heat revolution – it was fantastic to meet apprentices and engineers playing a key role in our clean power mission. Roles such as these are central to our clean energy jobs plan, which will create 400,000 new skilled jobs by 2030.

“We are seeing unprecedented demand for heat pumps, with September being the best month for applications on record, and expect that to increase further with our £2,500 discount for air-to-air heat pumps giving people the best of both worlds – keeping them warm in winter and cool in summer.”

Rodney Ayre, Head of Manufacturing at Mitsubishi Electric’s Livingston factory, said:

“We were delighted to welcome Minister McCluskey to our Livingston facility to showcase the incredible work our team does every day. Mitsubishi Electric has been investing in UK manufacturing and skills for more than five decades, and we’re proud to be at the heart of the country’s journey toward net zero. Our Livingston site not only produces world-class heat pumps but also helps train the next generation of heating engineers who will deliver the green transition.”

The visit underscored Mitsubishi Electric’s long-standing commitment to UK-based innovation, manufacturing, and employment, as well as the company’s contribution to delivering the UK Government’s mission for clean power by 2030.
