The challenge

In refurbishing its headquarters in Wolverhampton, Marston’s - one of the UK’s leading pub retailers and brewers – needed a complete overhaul of its current air conditioning and ventilation systems.

The building was more than 140 years old, and the company was keen to provide a new and stimulating environment for staff.

Being an old building, the ceiling heights were not generous, and as a result, one of the main challenges was finding the right equipment. This was to be a system that provided an efficient solution and fitted the limited space available.

The requirements

The current air conditioning, heating, and ventilation system was old and beginning to show its age. It was also extremely expensive to run. The R22 and R407C units on site needed replacing. Ultimately, it made sense to remove the whole system and start again from the beginning.

But the system chosen, and its parts, had to be in keeping with the ambiance and look of the newly refurbished and modernised offices. The offices sit on either side of a glass atrium and were designed to be comfortable and attractive to both staff and visitors.

The solution

In the end, the City Multi VRF air conditioning system was chosen. This was combined with an ultra-thin ceiling-concealed ducted indoor unit. It’s the type of unit that is particularly suitable for places where low-noise operation is desired.

A Lossnay mechanical ventilation system was fitted to provide additional heat recovery and reduce the overall energy costs for the company. This is achieved by the system extracting stale air and then recovering the heating or cooling energy to warm or cool the incoming fresh air, depending on what is necessary at the time.

Specially adapted service doors located in the ceiling grid system allow ease of access for servicing. In this way, there is no need to remove the ceiling tiles.

The entire system is controlled floor by floor through the Mitsubishi Electric intelligent AE200 centralised controller, which can monitor and control up to 200 indoor units.

Marston’s now has a headquarters building to be proud of, with a heating, cooling and ventilation system that not only complements the building but also has energy efficiency at its heart.
