We look at the UK’s big switch to electric heating

Joanna Crown, Product Marketing Manager at Mitsubishi Electric, explains why installers are key to the UK’s low-carbon heat future – and how they can access the training to put them ahead of the field.

The UK government is committed to achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050. Ditching fossil fuel heat systems in homes is central to hitting that target.

The government’s favoured alternative is heat pumps and it’s targeting 600,000 heat pump installations per year by 2028. This is the future of energy efficient and low carbon heating systems, tapping into the UK’s increasingly green electricity grid.

But with 85% of UK homes relying on gas boilers, it’s a challenging objective.

Now is the perfect time for heating installers to get involved with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Getting on the BUS

To drive this market change, the government set up the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) in 2022. It provides a grant of up to £7,500 to encourage homeowners and small business property owners to replace their traditional heating systems with heat pumps.

Installers play a pivotal role in delivering this scheme. From advising on system suitability and sizing to applying for the BUS grant, their expertise also ensures that installations meet the technical requirements and are completed efficiently.

The BUS is creating enormous opportunities for installers, so understanding the requirements and the technology is vital.

To be eligible for the BUS, installers must be members of the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) or part of an MCS umbrella scheme. Properties must also have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) and the heat pump system must meet the Scheme performance criteria.

Matching what gas can do

As the UK’s largest heat pump manufacturer, Mitsubishi Electric is supporting its installer partners every step of the way on this important mission.

The Ecodan range of heat pumps meets the efficiency requirements of the BUS.

Our latest heat pump, the Ecodan R290 is the only heat pump in the UK that can provide high heating temperatures of 75°C all the way down to -15°C outside. This matches that of a traditional gas boiler.

It’s available in 5kW, 6kW and 8kW along with various packaged cylinders for easy installation.

So Ecodan really can deliver reliable and sustainable heating solutions for a range of property types.

Comprehensive training

Getting to grips with the new heating technologies is vital for installers. That’s why we have developed comprehensive training at our centres in Hatfield and Manchester as well as our Livingston factory in Scotland.

We can train up to 90 engineers at a time with our online courses and webinars, and we can also deliver over 1,000 face-to-face training sessions per year at each site, giving us plenty of scope to meet training needs across the country.

Our courses include MCS-approved Low Temperature Heating and Hot Water System training. Our training facilities even include Virtual Reality technology for an immersive learning experience.

So, for installers looking to expand their expertise in heat pump technology, now is the perfect time to get involved with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

Contact us today to book your training session and learn more about our Ecodan range.

Our expert trainers are ready to help you master the technology and enhance your skills, ensuring you can offer the best solutions to your customers.
